If you don’t have a sailboat, you can get there by train or bus (49 from Colombo, 45 from Kandy, 835 from Anuradhapura, 48/49 from Polonannawura, or 88 from Jaffna to name a few lines. Your travel budget in Sri Lanka can go easily for $20-30 USD per day including food, accommodation and transportation. When we were in Sri Lanka (February 2017), €1 was around 160LKR and $1 was around 150LKR.As the exchange rate varies this may be different now.
